Neil Howard

Neil Howard is a singer-songwriter with a unique vocal style and lyric sensibility. With a sound at times compared to the likes of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie and Nick Cave, Howard's songs derive from a somewhat older range of influences. From big band swing and '40s ballads, to doo-wop and rockabilly, from classical to punk to folk - the songs begin as a hydrid of vintage ingredients and coalesce into a fresh, uniquely modern form of musical storytelling.

Howard and his band, The New Black Trio, can be seen performing throughout the Bay Area, at such halls such as the Last Day Saloon, The Hotel Utah, the Red Devil Lounge and the Cafe Du Nord.

In 2003, as a solo performer, Neil Howard made the finals in the Hotel Utah's Challenge '03, recorded his live debut CD 'Sides' at Last Stop Records and landed his song 'Daylight' on the Last Stop's studio compilation, Kick Out The Jamz Vol I. Soon after, The New Black Trio was formed - an acoustic combo highlighting Howard’s dark, wry torch songs and loose rockabilly folk guitar, now accompanied by Roy Elder on stand-up bass and Joey Sunset on drums.

In March, the trio recorded their debut EP with Last Stop's guru Alex James Muscat.
